The genuine value for a small product business is discovery. Reaching independent retailers otherwise requires trade shows, cold outreach, or sales representatives, all of which cost more than a listing. For a maker with a product that suits independent retail, the platform puts you in front of buyers actively looking, and the terms it offers them lower the barrier to trying an unfamiliar brand.

The economics require checking against your actual costs before listing. Wholesale pricing is typically around half of retail, and commission comes off that. If your margin is not built for wholesale from the start, the arithmetic will not work and no volume fixes it. Work out the wholesale price you can sustain first, and only then decide whether it is viable.

The strategic caution is dependency, in the same shape as any marketplace. Retailers acquired through the platform are subject to its commission structure, and your relationship with them is mediated. Bringing your own retailers in generally carries better terms, which is worth understanding because it changes whether you use the platform for discovery or for processing.

Fulfilment is the part new sellers underestimate. Wholesale means larger orders, packing to a standard retailers expect, invoicing, and lead times you must hold. A business that cannot reliably produce and ship a case quantity on schedule should solve that before pursuing the channel.

Prepare the material buyers need before listing, because retail buyers evaluate quickly and move on. Clean product photography on a plain background, accurate case quantities and dimensions, lead times you can actually hold, and a line sheet showing wholesale and suggested retail pricing. A listing missing any of those loses buyers who were interested, and the fix is preparation rather than promotion.

Decide your wholesale terms before listing rather than negotiating them per retailer, because inconsistency becomes a problem once you have several accounts. Minimum order value, case quantities, lead times, and whether you offer exclusivity in an area. Retailers talk to each other, and terms that differ without an evident reason produce awkward conversations later.

Protect your direct channel while using the platform, since retailers reasonably object to being undercut by the brand they stock. Setting a suggested retail price and selling at or above it on your own site keeps the relationship workable, and discounting below your stockists is the fastest way to lose them. That constraint is worth understanding before wholesale becomes a meaningful share of revenue.
